Whistles

My first whistle for working dog was an aluminum whistle in the "Luminator" pattern from Rob Drummond. It was easy to learn, loud and lightweight. After over 10 years of use, I was looking to purchase a new one when I found out it was no longer available. I couldn’t find another pattern that I liked enough and so I decided to remake it.

I made some modifications to improve the design. The whistle is now machined from a solid piece of 6061 aluminum. It is also now hard anodized instead of a bare aluminum finish. The hard anodized finished is very suited to a whistle. This is a much thicker layer than standard anodizing. It helps seal the surface, provides good scratch resistance and is food safe. Due to the nature of the process, it is only available in limited colours. The whistles are also bead blasted before anodizing to remove machine marks. This provides a slight texture to the surface.

The current production whistles are the result of lots of prototypes and testing. At first I had no intention to sell these whistles. I was very happy with the result but didn’t intend to scale up. It was during his clinic at our farm that Jared Epp tried our whistle and convinced me it was good enough to offer more widely. A few weeks later, the first batch of production versions were being manufactured.

Like the original, we find them easy to learn, easy to use, lightweight and loud.

Always looking to improve, we now offer two other versions:

  • The stainless steel version is a modified design of the original. The cavity was modified to improve sounding. It is also thicker and much heavier. Some users find it easier to sound and perhaps a bit louder.

  • The newest addition is the thick aluminum version. It brings the changes made in the stainless steel version to lightweight aluminum. Sound and use is very close to the stainless version.

Lanyards

With whistles go lanyards. I wanted something that:

  • Has no clip to open, break, or make noise against the whistle.

  • Is lightweight, durable and not leather.

  • Low cost.

I settled on nylon paracord lanyard with a thin microcord device loop. These are all tied by hand. We can source high quality material within Canada in a wide array of colours.

After some requests, we offer select lanyards with a charm tied in the knot. Current selection is in the store.

Rope Lines & Leashes

An outgrowth of tying lanyards was starting to make lines and leashes. All our rope is new PPM material. It is lightweight, strong, doesn’t stretch, holds up in wet conditions and has good grip in hand. These are sewn and wrapped with accent whipping from nylon paracord. All hardware is stainless steel.

We bring in PPM rope in a variety of colours. New colours are offered when available and existing colours are usually here for a limited time.

Leashes are available with a snap or loop. Different lengths and rope thicknesses are available in the store.

Lines do not have a handle. 6ft and 10ft lengths are offered in the store. These are great for working in larger grassy areas. They are very lightweight. For muddy or sandy conditions, see our biothane options.

Biothane Lines

Rope lines have never held up well in the sand footing of our pen. In the wet, we started to find the rope would pick up material and get heavy. This caused it to more easily tangle in dog’s feet. Biothane lines are an easy solution. They do not pick up material and are easy to clean. The only downside is the material is heavier and more expensive than rope.

We bring in 6mm biothane cord (round). Ends are capped with a vinyl cap. A stainless steel snap and ferrule complete the line. Commonly requested line lengths are offered in the store.

Stock Sticks

We have fibreglass sorting stix from Koehn available while they last.

  • 1/2” diameter x 54” length.

  • Covered with vinyl.

  • Golf grip.

  • Can be cut down to preferred length.
